Inventory in a distillery is more complex than most businesses. You're tracking raw ingredients, packaging, valuable bulk spirit, and finished goods that carry excise — all at once. Done well, inventory management prevents stockouts, reduces waste and keeps your compliance clean.
The four layers of distillery inventory
Think of your stock in four layers:
- Raw materials — grain, botanicals, sugar, yeast, water treatment
- Packaging — bottles, closures, labels, cartons
- Bulk spirit — new make and maturing spirit in tanks and casks
- Finished goods — bottled product ready to sell
Each behaves differently and needs its own approach.
Raw materials
Track quantity on hand, unit cost and supplier for each material. The single most useful feature here is a reorder level — a threshold that flags when stock is running low so you can buy before you run out mid-production. See setting inventory reorder points.
Packaging
Bottles, caps and labels are easy to overlook until a bottling run stops because you're 200 bottles short. Tie packaging to your products with a simple bill of materials (e.g. one bottle + one cap + one label per unit) so a bottling run automatically depletes the right components.
Bulk spirit

Finished goods
Once bottled, track finished stock by product and lot number, and distinguish bonded (excise not yet paid) from tax-paid stock. This matters for both fulfilment and compliance, and ties directly into managing finished goods and dispatch.
